Watch thisrelated to the topic of determinism that provides a clear description of the concept.  Consider his assertion that free will and determinism are compatible and explore this concept in regard to criminal behavior and nature/nurture debate. For this discussion:

  1. Discuss your view of determinism and free will.  Provide a brief description and definition of each.
  2. Do you ascribe to the idea that criminal behavior is in some part or as a whole deterministic?
  3. If so, please elaborate and explain your perspective.
  4. How do the following presuppositions relate to human behavior and the development of our perspectives on nature and nurture, and criminal behavior?

Consider what assumptions we begin within any discussion of free will and determinism.  Some believe human beings are born with a clean slate, while others may hold the view human beings are born good or born bad.  A clean slate presupposition holds that human beings are neither good nor bad but at the mercy of nurture or environmental forces.  Others presume human beings are naturally good, a state in which something happens to cause criminal behavior, or that human beings are born bad, a state in which our natural inclinations must be overcome for us to avoid criminal behavior.
