AFRS 4501: AFRICAN AMERICANS, AFRICA, AND

PAN-AFRICANISM

SPRING 2022

TOPIC PAPER INSTRUCTIONS

DUE TO THE “TOPIC PAPER #1” DROP BOX BY 10:00 PM ON SUNDAY, APRIL 10, 2022

Hakim Adi names a plethora of Pan Africanists leaders in his text, Pan-Africanism: A History. In this

three-page essay, you will choose one of the lesser known Pan African leaders that Adi names. I must approve

your pick before you submit your essay to make sure that your choice is obscure. Think about the questions and

ideas below as you construct your essay. You should not simply answer the questions in the order they are

presented. Instead, weave your responses into a coherent narrative that fully explores the contributions of your

chosen personality. Throughout your essay you should incorporate key terms from the assigned textbook.

You essay must include two additional academic sources that directly reference the personality described.

Consider the following:

What is the ethnic background of your personality of choice?

What writings related to Pan-Africanism did they publish?

In what major Pan-African events did they participate?

What influences contributed to their involvement in Pan Africanism?

Describe their contribution to the Pan African Movement.

You must submit your essay to the “topic paper #1” drop box within Desire2Learn as a Microsoft Word

document that is at least three, double-spaced pages. Use one-inch margins and Times New Roman font. It

should be thesis driven, proofread, and well written. Be careful to keep your paper concise and to the point. Do

not copy summaries from the internet or other sources. You will receive a zero for cases of plagiarism.

CRITERIA: I will grade your essay based on the following: Personality selection; proper citations for direct

and indirect quotes and paraphrased sentences; selection of sources; quality of writing in terms of clarity,

grammar, and structure; and the coverage of the questions above. Owl Purdue has more information if you need
