Choose one of the excerpts listed above that interests YOU, for
example the excerpt from Machiavellis The Prince in the course
readings
b. Zoom in on and explain one or two of its central ideas, for
example the idea that if the prince or ruler has to choose, he should choose to be feared rather than loved, and explain what Machiavellis reasons were, according to the excerpt.
c. Find secondary sources at least 2 or more (apart from the textbook) that deal with this topic either directly or indirectly.
d. Discuss the viewpoint(s) of these secondary sources on the basis of your reading and interpretation of the primary source, explaining where and why you agree / disagree, partially agree / disagree with what they have to say about the subject specifically, or about Machiavellis views on the character of a prince or ruler. For example, some secondary sources may claim that Machiavelli was very idealistic and that in reality a Renaissance prince had no option but to be loved by his subjects. Other secondary sources may claim that Machiavelli was thoroughly realistic and that in fact in this regard he based his political theory on the rule of Cesare Borgia. Which of the two theories do you agree / disagree with? Or, if all your sources are in agreement and you agree as well, explain why you support them.
