CONTEXT

When Grenny describes Crucial Conversations, he notes that when there is a conversation, especially one in which you must ask for something or confront something, there are three elements at play:

-high stakes
-strong emotions
-opposing opinions

Objectives
Apply crucial conversations technique

INSTRUCTION;

After listening to the presentation by Grenny (YouTube) and reviewing the book Crucial Conversations, consider how communication tools and the use of Crucial Conversations can aid in personal leadership when encountering bio-ethical situations.  How can cultural linguistic competence be applied as well?

How might a crucial conversation evolve using the three elements: (1) high stakes, (2) strong emotions, and (3) opposing opinions as you unpack the conversation.

In this course – we describe several issues that impact the proper management of a clinical research site.  Chose one of those areas and imagine a crucial conversation that might take place among 2 parties.  Start off outlining the three elements- from the perspective of two individuals involved in the conversation.  Then describe how the conversation might go when applying Crucial Conversation points and cultural linguistic competence- to achieve optimal solutions.  What is the main take home message?  This will be put together in the form of a “script”.  Maximum 3 page paper (text only).

(HINT – if you are having trouble getting started:  Pretend you were hired to be a study nurse to intiate an informed consent of a patient who has already received a strong sedative; how do you communicate with the investigator in this situation.  Try to come up with one imaginary (or real) situation and describe how a crucial conversation might occur.)
