2 PYRAMIDS AND A CONE

EXERCISE 1: MASLOWS HIERARCHY OF HUMAN NEEDS

View the 3 video clips below:
Creation of Wilson the Volleyball
I Made Fire
I’m Sorry Wilson
Discussion: In the movie, Castaway, the protagonist, Chuck Noland, played by Tom Hanks, is aboard an airplane that crashes into the ocean during a storm, and he is immediately confronted by his own human needs.  He needs to escape the sinking plane and swim to the surface.  Chuck needs to find land.  When he does make it to an island, he gathers food and water, finds a place to sleep and makes fire.  He is very pleased with himself for making fire with elemental materials and without any help.  He examines the resources around him which include the airplane cargo that has washed ashore.  Among these are ice skates and a packaged Wilson brand volleyball.  In the process of making fire, he injures his hand, and discovers that when he grabs the volleyball with his bleeding hand, it leaves a rough image of a face on the ball, and he continues to decorate it.  He names it Wilson after the brand name on the packaging, and it becomes his companion.  Chuck talks to Wilson, appears to listen to Wilson, and at the end, when Wilson falls overboard in rough seas, he cries out and apologizes to Wilson for leaving him behind.  Chuck uses the ice skates as a cutting tool and even extracts one of his own very painfully infected teeth with an ice skate.  Near the end of his time on the island, we find out that he had been planning to hang himself if his loneliness ever overwhelmed him.
Chuck spends several years alone on the island, but finally decides he must try to make it back to civilization.

With his Hierarchy of Human Needs, Abraham Maslow was telling us that certain human needs take priority over others and that we must achieve the base (bottom) needs before we can attend to the higher needs.  Where do you see the behaviors of the castaway as they indicate the various human needs?  See if you can find 1 or 2 examples of how he addresses or attains each need in the Castaway story.  One example has been done for you:

EXAMPLES (FROM THE STORY) OF THE ATTAINMENT OF HUMAN NEEDS
Self-Actualization: _________________________________________________________________
Esteem:  _________________________________________________________________________
Belongingness: ____________________________________________________________________
Safety: __________________________________________________________________________
Physiological: Air – Escape the sinking plane, and ___________________________________
In one brief paragraph, tell us how you interpret or understand the characters creation of Wilson and his reaction when Wilson falls overboard?

EXERCISE 2: BLOOMS TAXONOMY (Modified) 6 LEVELS OF COGNITION

For further information, please visit this link from the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching: https://cft.vanderbilt.edu/guides-sub-pages/blooms-taxonomy/
Just as Maslow believed that his pyramid needed a strong and foundation, Bloom places remembering (originally knowledge) at the base of his pyramid, topped by ever higher, yet dependent, levels of cognitive ability and accomplishment.  In the exercise below, there may be more than one correct answer, but try to choose the most correct. Number 3 has been done for you.

MATCH THE LEVEL OF COGNITION WITH EACH OF THE 6 ACHIEVEMENTS PRESENTED:
1.    A student learns the names of the 6 basic nutrients.  _________________
2.    A student assesses the effects of various dietary changes on competitive cross country runners.
_________________
3.    A student is able to distinguish the component parts of a balanced meal and what each component contributes to health.  Analyze (examine component parts to see how they affect the whole)
4.    A student is able to voice a reason for a behavioral prescription in his own words.  _________________
5.    A student is able to construct a model program of behavior change for a previously unaddressed population and behavior  _________________
6.    A student is able to use label-reading skills learned in class when buying food in a store.

EXERCISE 3: DALES CONE OF EXPERIENCE

http://teacherworld.com/potdale.html
Dales cone of experience indicates how much a learner remembers, retains and is able to apply based on the type of educational experience he or she undergoes.  Students learn and retain more as they are more actively involved in the learning process.  Think of an example from your own life where you learned something well because of a high level of participation and involvement in the learning experience and write it in the space provided below.
EXERCISE 4: AUTHENTICITY
The word authentic appears in the University of the State of New York Publication, A Guidance Document for Achieving the New York State Standards in Health Education, which you are now familiar with (if you werent before). Here is the entry:
Authentic: Health education needs to provide real life learning experiences and personal applications of health knowledge and skills in relevant situations. Assessments need to demonstrate the actual personal application of health knowledge and skills through personal wellness plans, logs, reflective journals, demonstrations, simulations, role-plays, community service learning and other tangible products and performances.
Label the following types of assessment as either A for Authentic or T for Traditional:
_____ Multiple choice test
_____ Pretend shopping trip to a real supermarket
_____ Role playing
_____ Keeping a dietary journal
_____ Essay test
_____ Practicing hand washing at a kindergarten sink
_____ Writing a letter to a public official about a dangerous intersection

EXERCISE 5: SYNTHESIS OF LEARNING
You have just completed 4 exercises: Maslows Hierarchy, Blooms Taxonomy, Dales Cone, and Authenticity.  Write a 200 to 300-word double-spaced essay stating how you believe the knowledge gained from each exercise could help you to become a better health educator.  Begin your essay on this page.
