 Research has estimated that the risk of emotional and behavioral disturbances among children with intellectual disabilities is approximately three to five times greater than among typically developing children (Enfold, Ellis, & Emerson, 2011). How might intellectual disabilities affect a childs sense of self-worth and perception of competency as they enter adolescence and young adulthood? What effects might this have on functioning in school, relationships, work, and family?
