Selected Assigned Readings in 50 ESSAYS: A PORTABLE ANTHOLOGY

Item
Assignment Due: First draft of Writing Project #2-Compare and Contrast Essay
So far, we have covered a series of paired readings; Langston Hughes, Salvation and Stephanie Ericsson The Ways We Lie in Module 6,  The Fourth of July by Audre Lorde and Zora Neale Hurston, How It Feels to Be Colored Me  in Module 7, James Baldwin Notes of a Native Son and Bharati Mukherjee Two Ways to Belong in America in Module 8, Maya Angelou Graduation and Mike Rose I Just Wanna Be Average in Module 9 and  Jen Gann Wrongful Birth and George Orwell Shooting an Elephant in Module 10.

As you can see in each paired reading, two stories can have the same theme, but authors can approach that theme in totally different ways. For your Compare and Contrast essay, you will identify how the author varies their approach to similar themes; How are the messages similar and/or how are they different?  Think about how authors reacted to conflict.

A successful compare/contrast essay for this prompt will constantly be looking at the works of literature together, moving back and forth between them and using the tools of literary analysis to point out significant similarities and differences. This means that using a point-by-point compare/contrast structure is more effective for this prompt. The point-by-point structure calls for you to choose several points of comparison between your works of literature, and for each body paragraph to discuss paired reading and how those works deal with the topic of that paragraph

Write a Four to Six (4-6) page essay where you identify how the author varies their approach to similar themes; Compare and contrast the treatment of a similar theme in your chosen paired reading.
