Submit an independently written 3-5 page paper (approx. 700 words) plus attachment and research appendix and 5 sources. It must be based on a human geography issue of interest. The paper will critically analyze a global or local issue.
Topic: General Problem parameters: Where do the Hurricanes, aka cyclones, typhoons, willy-willys (tsunami?) originate? Where are the areas on the globe that are going to be hit and devastated with disgusting regularity? Are there more disasters happening now, or is that we can now use GIS to see and track them, and that every little rainstorm is delivered to us in lurid colors via the media.? Also, the definition of a Hurricane vs a Tropical storm changed in recent years. Internationally EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD uses the Metric system Kilometers per hour not MPH, so the actual definitional force of the storms was lowered. Geocache quote, "The magnification of the potential disaster may have more to do with our ability to finely track and project these storms onto the screens of the world by wildly hyped media heroes standing out in the wind, than any real natural trend".
· Research what happened in a specific disaster and how people and cultures reacted or were affected.
· Where can you get the best information on the probable extent of the disaster problem and what is really going on?
· What will likely happen to these people? Who oversees the disaster relief?
· Digging Deeper: If you prefer, you can research the potential MEGA disaster in Hawaii. Will you (your family, business, cat?) survive? Prove it. Do not forget your sources (5) and graphics.
