The United States is in an economic crisis, and health promotion and cost-effective behavioral change strategies are needed to reduce health spending. According to the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, at least half of U.S. adults will be obese by 2030. In addition, more than 133 million adults are living with at least one chronic disease such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease (Dossey, Luck, Schaub, & Keegan, 2018). This increasing burden of illness will go right to the bottom line, adding $66 billion in annual obesity-related medical costs over and above today’s $147 billion (Begley, 2017). America must shift the focus of health care from cure to prevention. We must promote self-efficacy and empower people to recognize their potential to engage I promoting their own health and well-being. The Healthy People 2020 initiate strives to do this and continues the work started in 2000 with Healthy People initiative for improving the nations health. I believe that Healthy People 2020 has overarching goals which includes: attaining high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury and premature death, to achieve health equity, eliminate disparities and improve the health of all groups, to create social and physical environments that promote good health for all and ultimately to promote quality of life, healthy development, and health behaviors across all life stages. These goals must be our guide into the future of health care. Todays emerging nursing roles of the new millennium will pave the way for the next generation of nursing care.
